Forza Horizon 5 Tuning Guide

Part 4 - Off-road Tuning

This part explains how to setup cars to work good for dirt or cross country racing.

Basically this works by altering general tunes as described in Part 2 to work better in off-road scenarios.

Generally speaking dirt tunes require a softer and more understeer setup while cross country tunes require a stiffer more oversteer setup.

Tires

Dirt and Cross Country tunes generally require lower tire pressures that provide more grip on the bumpier dirt and cross-country tracks.

Dirt tunes require higher tire pressures than Cross Country tunes as dirt tracks offer more grip than Cross Country tracks. They also require a slight understeer setup to stabilize the car on corner entry.

Cross Country tunes on the other hand require lowest tire pressures and a slight oversteer setup to improve rotating.

For dirt tunes reduce tire pressure as determined for road tunes in part 2 by 3.5 psi. To achieve a slight understeer setup decrease front tire pressure by 0.5 psi and increase rear tire pressure by 0.5 psi.

For cross country tunes increase tire pressure as determined for road tunes in part 2 by 5.5 psi. To achieve a slight oversteer setup increase front tire pressure by 0.5 psi and decrease rear tire pressure by 0.5 psi.

Front Tire Pressure         Rear Tire Pressure

Dirt                             -3.5 - 0.5                           -3.5 + 0.5

Cross Country          -5.5 + 0.5                           -5.5 - 0.5

Example: Car with general tire pressures 31.5/31.5

Tire pressures for Dirt Tune:

Front Tire Pressure: 31.5 - 3.5 - 0.5 = 27.5

Rear Tire Pressure: 31.5 -3.5 + 0.5 = 28.5

Tire pressures for Cross Country Tune:

Front Tire Pressure: 31.5 - 5.5 + 0.5 = 26.5

Rear Tire Pressure: 31.5 - 5.5 - 0.5 = 25.5

Road Cars and Rally / Off-road Cars with Drag, Road or Drift Chassis  Changed in Horizon 5

Road cars generally require additional chassis tuning when bringing them to dirt or cross country tracks since their chassis is intended for road racing in the first place and not for off-road racing.

Similarly rally and off-road cars that have drag, road or drift tires equipped require additional chassis tuning when bringing them to dirt or cross country tracks. Note that some especially older rally and off-road cars don't have stock rally or off-road tires, these cars must be treated as road cars regarding chassis tuning.

For Dirt drag chassis require lower front tire pressure while off-road, road and drift chassis require higher rear tire pressure. For Cross Country drag chassis require higher rear tire pressure while off-road, road and drift chassis require lower front tire pressure.

Cars with Off-road / Rally Chassis and Chassis Reinforcement  Changed in Horizon 5

Cars with a off-road or rally chassis may require additional tire tuning depending on the installed chassis reinforcement upgrade. This is because for off-road racing Stock chassis reinforcement (no chassis reinforcement) is best suited, having a higher chassis stiffness via chassis reinforcement upgrades requires additional oversteer tuning to compensate for changed chassis behavior on the track.

Note: Many cars come already with a stock Street (only Sport or Race chassis reinforcement upgrades available), Sport (only Race chassis reinforcement upgrade available) or Race chassis reinforcement (no chassis reinforcement upgrades available) installed. Tune the tires accordingly.

Chassis Reinf.      Front Tire Pressure Offset    Rear Tire Pressure Offset

Stock                                       0.0                                            0.0

Street                                    +0.5                                           -0.5

Sport                                     +1.0                                           -1.0

Race                                      +1.5                                           -1.5

Heavy Cars

Cars with a weight that exceeds 5000 lbs for Dirt or 6000 lb for Cross Country need increased tire pressure to compensate for high weight affecting tire contact patch size. For Dirt for each 2000 lb increase over 3000 lb an 5 psi tire pressure increase is required for best handling. For Cross Country For each 3000 lb increase over 3000 lb an 5 psi tire pressure increase is required for best handling.

Extreme heavy cars that exceed 8000 lbs are equipped with special tires, here car weight simply needs to be halved before doing the above calculations.

Light Cars

Light weight cars with a weight under 3000 lbs for Dirt or 4000 lb for Cross Country need decreased tire pressure to compensate for low weight affecting tire contact patch size. For Dirt for each 1000 lb decrease over 4000 lb an 5 psi tire pressure decrease is required for best handling. For Cross Country for each 2000 lb decrease over 6000 lb an 5 psi tire pressure decrease is required for best handling.

Alignment

Dirt tunes require a more conservative, slight understeer alignment that helps stabilizing the car during cornering. In contrast cross country tunes require a more aggressive, slight oversteer alignment for improved cornering.

For dirt tunes increase front and rear camber by 0.1, decrease front toe by 0.1, increase rear by 0.1 and increase front caster by 0.1 to achieve a more conservative and understeer setup.

For cross country tunes reduce front and rear camber by 0.1, increase front toe by 0.1, decrease rear by 0.1 and decrease front caster by 0.1 to achieve a more aggressive and oversteer setup.

Dirt                         +0.1                  -0.1                +0.1             +0.1

Cross Country       -0.1                  +0.1                -0.1              -0.1

Example: Car with general alignment settings: -2.0/-1.5/0.0/0.0/5.0

Alignment for Dirt Tune:

Front Camber: -2.0 + 0.1 = -1.9

Rear Camber: -1.5 + 0.1 = -1.4

Front Toe = 0.0 - 0.1 = -0.1

Rear Toe = 0.0 + 0.1 = 0.1

Caster = 5.0 + 0.1 = 5.1

Alignment for Cross Country Tune:

Front Camber: -2.0 - 0.1 = -2.1

Rear Camber: -1.5 - 0.1 = -1.6

Front Toe = 0.0 + 0.1 = 0.1

Rear Toe = 0.0 - 0.1 = -0.1

Caster = 5.0 - 0.1 = 4.9

Anti-roll Bars

Dirt tunes require a slightly stiffer, more understeer ARB setup that helps stabilizing the car during cornering and reduce body roll. Cross country tunes require a softer, more overststeer ARB setup that improves cornering,

For dirt tunes first increase ARBs by 0.1 to slightly stiffen the ARBs as compared to road tunes.  Then for achieving a slight understeer increase front ARB by 0.1 and decrease rear ARB by 0.1.

For cross country tunes first decrease ARBs by 0.1 to slightly soften the ARBs as compared to road tunes.  Then for achieving a slight oversteer decrease front ARB by 0.1 and increase rear ARB by 0.1.

Example: Car with general ARB settings: 20.5/19.5

ARBs for Dirt Tune:

Front ARB: 20.5 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 20.7

Rear ARB: 19.5 + 0.1 - 0.1 = 19.5

Cars with Race Suspension

Cars with race suspension generally require softer spring rates for off-road racing. Simply halve the general spring rates for race suspension for Dirt or Cross Country racing.

Note that this effectively means that you use the same spring rates for rally and race suspension for off-road racing  (general tuning states to halve the spring rates for rally suspension). Also this leads to minimum race suspension spring rates in most cases.

High Power Cars

For cars with with 400 hp or more power dirt and cross country tunes require additional softening of springs to account for higher forces on the chassis while cornering. For dirt tunes spring rates must be reduced by 24% and for cross country tunes spring rates must be reduced by 12%.

Cars with Off-road / Rally Chassis and Chassis Reinforcement  Changed in Horizon 5

Cars with a off-road or rally chassis may require additional ARB tuning depending on the installed chassis reinforcement upgrade.

Tune ARBs accordingly.

Ride Height

Dirt and cross country tunes generally require maximum ride height for increased suspension travel while cornering and increased stability during acceleration and braking. Dirt tunes additionally require a slight understeer setup to stabilize the car while cornering while cross country tunes require a slight oversteer setup for improved cornering.

For dirt tunes set front and rear ride height to maximum possible values and then decrease rear ride height by 0.1 to achieve a slight understeer setup.

For cross country tunes set front and rear ride height to maximum possible values and then decrease front ride height by 0.1 to achieve a slight oversteer setup.

For Dirt drag chassis require max rear ride height while off-road, road and drift chassis require max front ride height. For Cross Country drag chassis require max rear ride height while off-road, road and drift chassis require max front ride height.

Dampers

Road Cars  Changed in Horizon 5

Damper tuning for road cars depends on the installed tire compound and suspension. For road cars that have less than 400hp or use stock tire compound (no tire compound upgrade) or that have no adjustable suspension general damper settings as described in Part 2 can be used.

Road cars with 400hp or more power and adjustable suspension that have a tire compound upgrade installed require extra chassis tuning to compensate for changed chassis behaviour on road due to changed tire compound. The effects on the chassis are more pronounced the lower or higher the tire compound upgrade is compared to the cars stock compound.

Generally upgrading to tires with higher grip than the stock tires requires higher rear damping while upgrading to tires with lower grip requires higher front damping.

Road cars that have drag, rally, off-road race or drift tires installed have changed from a road chassis to a complete different chassis type which require a different chassis tuning depending on changed chassis type.

Generally drag and off-road chassis require higher front rebound and higher rear bump while rally and drift chassis require higher rear rebound and higher front bump.

Rally and Off-road Cars  Changed in Horizon 5

Bringing rally or off-road cars with adjustable suspension to road tracks generally requires extra chassis tuning because the cars stock chassis is intended for off-road racing.

Using stock, rally, off-road or drag tires require higher front rebound and higher rear bump, while road and drift tires require higher rear rebound and higher front bump.

Note: There are some (especially older) rally and off-road cars that are not equipped with stock rally or off-road tires but with Stock tire compound instead meaning they have a stock road chassis. Tuning wise these must be treated as road cars.

Cars with Rally / Off-road Suspension  Changed in Horizon 5

Cars with rally suspension or off-road suspension (all off-road cars with stock adjustable suspension) require additional damper adjustments for road racing.

Generally rally and off-road suspension require higher damping for best performance on road.

Cars with Stock chassis reinforcement require understeer tuning while cars with sport or race chassis reinforcement require oversteer tuning.

Note: Many street cars come already with a stock Street chassis reinforcement installed (only Sport or Race chassis reinforcement upgrades available), likewise most sports and race cars come with stock Sport chassis reinforcement (only Race chassis reinforcement upgrade available) or Race chassis reinforcement (no chassis reinforcement upgrades available) respectively. Brakes

Road Cars  Changed in Horizon 5

Brake pressure tuning for road cars depends on the installed tire compound and suspension. For road cars with less than 400hp or that use stock tire compound (no tire compound upgrade) or that have no adjustable suspension general brake settings as described in Part 2 can be used.

Generally drag, off-road and lower grade road chassis like snow or vintage require lower brake pressure while drift tires require higher brake pressure. Using regular road chassis like street, sport, semi race or race as well as rally chassis don't require to adjust brake pressure, for these chassis general brake settings as described in Part 2 can be used.

Road Cars

Downforce tuning for road cars depends on the installed tire compound and suspension. For road cars with less than 400hp or that use stock tire compound (no tire compound upgrade) or that have no adjustable suspension general downforce settings as described in Part 2 can be used.

Generally drag and off-road chassis require higher rear downforce, lower grade road chassis like snow or vintage race tires require higher front and rear downforce and drift chassis require lower front downforce. Using regular road chassis like street, sport, semi race or race as well as rally chassis don't require to adjust downforce levels, for these chassis general downforce settings as described in Part 2 can be used.
